Plan your trip to Aasiaat
Introduction to Aasiaat
Greenland’s fifth largest town is located in the southern part of Disko Bay in a beautiful archipelago area, teeming with birds and offering excellent opportunities to get close to humpback and minke whales. With good reason, the area was the center of European whaling in the 18th century. Today, whales are hunted on a smaller scale, and several species are fully protected.

The best time to visit
Nature is indescribable and must be experienced. Enjoy a holiday in the land of a thousand islands, filled with birds and whales. There is the opportunity to take a boat trip and experience the whales. Other water-based options include kayaking, where you can paddle through the small channels between the many islands, or fishing, which is part of everyday life in Aasiaat.
Experiences
Once you have had your fill of nature, we recommend an excursion to the old town to see the colorful houses with the museum and community hall, which features 24 paintings by the artist Per Kirkeby. The museum exudes history. It is housed in the former colonial manager’s residence, and here you will find, among other things, artifacts dating back to the Paleo-Eskimo cultures and Dorset I and II.

City experiences
Don’t miss out on a boat trip with an experienced skipper! The summer months are the best, which also applies to boat or kayak trips around the archipelago. If you visit Aasiaat in winter, it is ideal to spend energy on the groomed cross-country ski trails. Alternatively, snowmobiles and dog sleds are available for those who prefer to enjoy without exertion.
Food and culture
In Aasiaat, culture is closely tied to nature, art, and history, with museums, colorful houses, and activities such as kayaking, dog sledding, and whale safaris. The food reflects the richness of the sea with fish and seafood, while social traditions like “kaffemik” turn meals into community experiences. Modern groceries are combined with local ingredients, creating a vibrant mix of tradition and modern life.
