The best time to visit
Kangerlussuaq is fantastic year-round! For the northern lights, September to April is best, while spring and summer (May–September) offer hiking, cycling, and wildlife in the green landscape. With more than 300 cloudless days a year, the chances of unique nature experiences are great. Whatever the season, adventure awaits.
Experiences
You can go hiking or mountain biking only about 25 km from Kangerlussuaq to the ice edge. Standing there and seeing the enormous mass of ice shimmer in white, blue, and green is a magical sight. You can also go by jeep if you prefer. Join a safari on the tundra and experience musk oxen, reindeer, and maybe Arctic foxes. One of the world’s largest populations of musk oxen lives around Kangerlussuaq, but keep your distance—these animals can be big and fast.

Nature experiences
From Kangerlussuaq, you can take a full-day hike to Mount Tacan, around Store Saltsø, and up to Granatfjeldet, where you can use a rock hammer to knock out a piece of semi-precious garnet as a souvenir. Bring a rock hammer and have a go at Garnet Rock, where you can chisel out and take home a piece of garnet stone—a unique and natural souvenir.
Food and culture
The menus in the area are shaped by Greenlandic, local ingredients—some of the country’s finest gourmet experiences can be found here.

Local experiences
Local Greenlanders invite you inside for “kaffemik,” a cozy gathering with coffee, cakes, and good stories. You get an authentic insight into the Greenlandic community. In the area around Kangerlussuaq, there are salt lakes—especially a large salt lake southwest of the TACAN station. The water can be drunk and tastes like mineral water without carbonation, a pure and natural experience in nature.
Transport
Transport in Kangerlussuaq: There is an international airport in the town, which serves as an important transport hub because many large aircraft stop over here. In addition, you can drive jeeps or cars from the airport out to nature areas and experiences such as the Ice Sheet.
