    From Hamburg Airport (HAM)

    Your trip starts with a short hop to Copenhagen, operated by our interline partner SAS. We recommend being at Hamburg Airport at least 2 hours before departure. Once you arrive in Copenhagen, your onward journey to Ilulissat is booked as part of the same ticket, so your baggage is checked through and you simply follow the connecting flights signage.

    Connecting in Copenhagen (CPH)

    Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) is Air Greenland’s main international hub. From 29 October 2026, we operate a direct flight from Copenhagen to Ilulissat once a week, on Wednesdays. Outside that weekly departure, your onward journey connects via Kangerlussuaq or Nuuk, with a possible overnight stay depending on the schedule. Connection times vary by departure, so always check the routing and layover length shown at booking.

    Arriving in Ilulissat (JAV)

    Ilulissat is home to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its dramatic glacier front. The town’s airport serves as the gateway to North Greenland and its surrounding settlements.

    When is it cheapest?

    As with our other routes to Greenland, fares on the Copenhagen–Ilulissat sector are typically lowest in the low season from October to March. Booking well ahead of your travel dates, and keeping an eye on flexible connection times and routings via Copenhagen, generally gives you the best combination of price and comfort.

    Economy tickets on the Air Greenland sectors include 20 kg of checked baggage plus 8 kg of hand baggage. Premium passengers get 30 kg checked luggage plus 2 pieces of hand luggage, max 8 kg total. Baggage allowance on the Hamburg–Copenhagen sector follows SAS’s policy for that fare type.

    In the event of weather-related cancellations on any Air Greenland sector, we rebook you free of charge to the next available departure. You are contacted automatically by SMS and email with the new departure time. We can also arrange hotel and meals if you are stranded en route.

    Danish and Nordic citizens do not need a visa for Greenland – a passport or valid ID is sufficient. Other EU citizens, including travellers departing from Germany, need a valid passport. Greenland is outside the Schengen Area, so always check the current entry requirements with your foreign ministry before departure.
