What you need to know about your trip

The most important information about the Maniitsoq to Ilulissat route, gathered in one place. This is a connecting journey via Nuuk – not a direct flight – but unlike some of our routes to Denmark, it runs year-round.

    1 stop
    Connection in Nuuk
Fly Maniitsoq-Nuuk, then connect onward to Ilulissat. No through check-in guarantee – check your booking confirmation.
    Year-round
    Departures
The Nuuk-Ilulissat leg operates up to about 3 times a day, and Maniitsoq-Nuuk runs several times a week – both all year, unlike our seasonal Denmark routes.
    One aircraft type
    Aircraft
Both legs are flown with a Dash 8 turboprop, Air Greenland's domestic workhorse across Greenland.
    Domestic
    Baggage allowance

Your journey from Maniitsoq to Ilulissat

    From Maniitsoq Airport (JSU)

There is no non-stop flight between Maniitsoq and Ilulissat. Instead, you travel with Air Greenland via Nuuk: first on the domestic hop from Maniitsoq Airport to Nuuk Airport (GOH), flown with a Dash 8 turboprop, taking around 35 minutes. Maniitsoq Airport is a small, STOL-capable airfield with a compact terminal and no de-icing equipment, so winter departures can be more weather-sensitive than at larger airports. We recommend being at the airport at least 90 minutes before departure.

    Connecting in Nuuk

Nuuk Airport is Greenland’s main hub, opened in November 2024 with a new 2,200-metre runway. From here, Air Greenland operates frequent onward flights to Ilulissat, also flown with a Dash 8 turboprop, taking roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours depending on the specific routing. As both legs use the same aircraft type and are part of Air Greenland's domestic network, connections in Nuuk are generally more flexible than on our routes to and from Denmark – but we still recommend confirming your onward booking and baggage arrangements when you book.

    A year-round route within Greenland

This journey run all year, so you can fly from Maniitsoq to Ilulissat at any time. That said, Greenlandic weather – especially fog, wind and winter storms – can still affect either leg, and Maniitsoq Airport's lack of de-icing equipment means winter departures from there are the most likely to see disruption. There is no WiFi on board.

    Arrival in Ilulissat (JAV)

Ilulissat Airport is one of Greenland's busiest, welcoming visitors to Greenland's most popular tourist destination outside Nuuk. Ilulissat sits on the edge of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the main starting point for iceberg cruises, whale watching and dog-sledding trips in the region.

In the event of weather-related changes

Greenlandic weather can affect either leg of this journey, particularly departures from Maniitsoq given the absence of de-icing equipment there. In the event of a weather cancellation, we rebook you free of charge to the next available departure, and you are contacted automatically by SMS and email. Because this itinerary involves a connection, we recommend allowing extra buffer time in Nuuk in case of delays.

Frequently asked questions about JSU → JAV

No. There is currently no non-stop flight between Maniitsoq and Ilulissat. You travel via Nuuk, taking the domestic Maniitsoq-Nuuk hop and then connecting onward to Ilulissat. See current flight times and connections in the booking system above.

The Maniitsoq-Nuuk leg takes approximately 35 minutes, and the onward Nuuk-Ilulissat leg takes roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the specific flight. Total journey time depends on your connection time in Nuuk, so check the specific schedule when booking.

Both legs run year-round. The Maniitsoq-Nuuk hop operates several times a week, and the Nuuk-Ilulissat leg is one of our most frequent domestic routes, with departures up to around three times a day. Unlike our seasonal Aalborg routes, there is no summer-only restriction on this connection.

In the event of weather-related cancellations on either leg, we rebook you free of charge to the next available departure. You are contacted automatically by SMS and email with the new departure time. We can also arrange hotel and meals if you are stranded en route, including in Nuuk if you miss your connection. Note that Maniitsoq Airport has no de-icing equipment, so winter delays on that leg are more likely.

Both legs are domestic Greenland flights, so the same baggage allowance generally applies across the journey. Check the terms shown for your fare during booking, as allowances can vary by ticket type. Extra baggage can be purchased during booking or up to 6 hours before departure.

Danish and Nordic citizens do not need a visa for Greenland – a passport or valid ID is sufficient. Other EU citizens need a valid passport. Greenland is outside the Schengen Area, so always check the current entry requirements with your foreign ministry before departure.

All tickets can be changed free of charge within 24 hours of booking. After that it depends on the fare type – Flex tickets can be changed freely, while discounted tickets carry a change fee. See the terms for your specific ticket in your booking confirmation.

Ilulissat is best known for the nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where massive icebergs calve from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Popular activities include iceberg boat tours, hiking the marked trails around the icefjord, whale watching in season, and dog-sledding in winter.
